歐盟為減少電子垃圾的產生，要讓消費者可透過同一個充電裝置為多款電子產品充電，因此決議所有中小型可攜電子裝置，包含手機、相機、電子書、耳機、掌上遊戲機、平板等都必須使用Type-C作為共通充電介面，而生產業者必須在2024年秋季以前遵循新規定。這項立法也意味著目前iPhone使用的Lightning介面，未來也必須配合歐盟新規定改為Type-C，iPhone特規的Lightning連接埠可能將在2024年走入歷史。蘋果資深副總 Greg Joswiak日前在華爾街日報的專訪中間接確認了，Joswiak回應：「別無選擇，只能遵守地方法規。」
2024年起歐盟規定所有中小型可攜電子裝置都要統一使用Type-C作為共通充電介面，針對性很強烈的指向iPhone使用的Lightning連接埠，但因此法限制在歐盟區，其他區域是否繼續使用 Lightning，對此， Joswiak 在訪談內並沒有進一步的說明。在今年iPhone 14 系列並沒立即改為Type-C，但也逐步改變，日前上市的iPad 第10代就已經捨棄Lightning採用Type-C介面。
至於iPhone何時才會全面改換連接埠，之前網路上有傳聞iPhone 15系列已經在測試Type-C的連接埠，且如果按照慣例應該會在2023年的9月亮相，但此一消息尚未證實。統一連接埠對於消費者來說，不管是安卓用戶或是iPhone手機都能共用同一充電線，便利性大幅提升。且根據配件商的說法，正規Lightning線材在販售時都需要支付給Apple授權金，未來統一為Type-C之後不需要再被Apple賺一筆，將來線材在末端售價上更具有彈性空間。
